Here’s a fun and flavorful twist on the traditional French Toast recipe! Cardamom, a dynamic spice plant native to Nepal and India, imparts an intense, sweet, and aromatic flavor to these toasts, that when combined with the richness of Challah bread, yields an out-of-this-world breakfast dish that will wow even your toughest culinary critic! Made with the healthiest eggs on the planet (Vital Farms, of course), as well as minimally refined sugars, and unsweetened almond milk, these toasts are also better for you than the average toast. Enjoy!
Cardamom Challah French Toast
Yield: 6 slices
Total Time: 15 minutes
8 – 10 cardamom pods, shell removed, seeds finely ground using mortar & pestle
4 Vital Farms pasture eggs
1 tablespoon coconut sugar or other unrefined sugar
½ cup unsweetened almond milk
Organic coconut oil or organic olive oil
¾ loaf challah bread, sliced (equivalent to about 6 thick slices)
Maple syrup to taste
- Add cardamom, eggs, salt, sugar, and almond milk to a large mixing bowl and whisk vigorously.
- Add enough oil to coat skillet and warm over medium heat. When ready whisk egg batter again to make sure cardamom grinds do not settle at bottom, and immediately after finishing, dip one slice of challah into batter, turning over a few times to soak adequately. Then immediately transfer to skillet. Repeat to fill skillet.
- Cook each side of challah until browned, then flip and cook again until browned, adding more oil if needed.
- Transfer toast to serving plate, stack, drizzle with maple syrup, and enjoy!
