Our Eggs

All our eggs come from pasture-raised hens. We start with natural pastures – pastures which are never treated with herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilizers – and regularly rotate them to keep them fresh and healthy. Of course, the natural fertilizer the ladies the leave behind certainly helps!

The girls are free to roam and forage as much as they like – we open the barn doors in the morning, and out they all go! We make sure there’s plenty of shade out on the pastures, and a ready supply of both clean, fresh water and our carefully formulated supplemental feed, but they’re free to come and go from the barn, and free to eat what they want, all day long.

Every one of our farms follows the same Certified Humane® pasture-raised standards, so the only real difference between our different labels is whether it Certified Organic, NonGMO Project Verified, or neither. The shields you’ll see below, which you’ll also see on our cartons, will tell you which it is.

The USDA’s Organic standards mean more than just a rubber stamp on the supplemental food that we provide our ladies – it’s a complete system that applies across the whole farm – from the chicks that we bring in to the wash that we clean the eggs with on their way out! And while our very first pasture-raised eggs were organic, and, to this day, we follow the tenets of organic farming on every one of our farms, not all our eggs carry the seal of Certification.

For the labels that do carry the seal, the only difference is in the supplemental feed that we provide them. Quite simply, hens are omnivorous, so can’t survive on a diet of grass alone, so we need to make a feed available that meets their very specific  nutritional requirements For our Vital Farms Organic Eggs and our Pasture Verde eggs this supplemental feed that we provide them the very best USDA Certified Organic feed that we can find. As such, it is free from GMO ingredients, hormones, antibiotics and pesticides.
